Zimbabwe has exported its first-ever shipment of fresh blueberries to China, opening the door to one of the world’s largest fruit markets after meeting the country’s strict import requirements.
Gaining access to the Chinese market is no easy task. Exporters must comply with stringent rules on pest control, traceability, orchard registration, inspections and export certification.
The shipment follows the market access protocol signed between Zimbabwe and China in September 2025.
According to the Horticultural Development Council (HDC), which represents the country’s growers, Zimbabwe had about 650 hectares under blueberry production in 2025 and exported around 9,500 tonnes.
Production is expected to expand to roughly 800 hectares in 2026, with exports projected to reach 11,500 tonnes.
“Now the real work begins. As an industry, we will continue pushing for policies that support increased production, as we keep testing the best routes to ensure a reliable supply of premium Zimbabwean blueberries to Chinese consumers,” HDC said.
Zimbabwe ranks among the top 5 blueberry exporters globally and holds the position of the world’s leader in blueberry export growth.
