A Bulawayo woman who scalded her husband with hot cooking oil after he chose to sleep on the floor following a misunderstanding has been sentenced to 315 hours of community service. The complainant told the court he had forgiven her and preferred a fine to prison.
Edina Nyenda, 32, of Luveve suburb, was convicted of physical abuse by Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube.
She was initially sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment. Six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining nine months were suspended on condition that she completes 315 hours of community service at Imbizo Primary School.
Giving evidence in court, the complainant, Charles Ncube, 31, said he had forgiven his wife and wanted her to be fined.
Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu told the court that Nyenda is the complainant’s wife. The court heard that at about 2 am on 9 May 2026, Ncube was sleeping on the bed before moving to the floor after a misunderstanding with his wife.
This upset Nyenda, who boiled cooking oil and poured it on Ncube’s face and left arm. Ncube suffered burns to his face and left arm and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. A police report was made, leading to Nyenda’s arrest.
