As Europe struggles with a heatwave, police in Berlin have turned to an unusual measure – sending two water cannons into the city streets to help the public cool down.

The vehicles, usually used at protests, toured the capital on Saturday, spraying water for locals and tourists. They visited key sites, including the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, and the Reichstag (Parliament).

Germany has been in the grip of extreme heat for several days, with temperatures reaching near 40 °C. The situation has been made worse by a lack of nighttime cooling, with temperatures staying high after dark in many areas.

According to early data from the German Weather Service, last night was the warmest ever recorded in the country. The highest overnight temperature was 29.4 °C in Kubschütz, eastern Saxony.

A provisional daytime high of 41.5 °C was measured at 4:20 pm on Saturday in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt.

Sunday is expected to be the peak of the heatwave. The German Weather Service (DWD) is forecasting extreme highs of between 37 °C and 41 °C. Later in the day and into the night, local thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, hail and strong gusts of wind in some areas.

Cooler weather is set to arrive on Monday. Overnight temperatures will drop to between 19 °C and 23 °C. Daytime highs on Monday will only reach 27 °C to 31 °C, with rain and isolated thunderstorms expected.
