City Parking Rolls Out 49 Smart Traffic Lights In Harare CBD

City Parking plans to install forty-nine smart traffic systems across Harare in a big push to ease the city’s traffic problems, the company has said.

The project is being done with the City of Harare. It involves replacing old traffic lights with new solar-powered ones at busy junctions in the city centre.

The new lights have bright LED displays, use less energy, can be checked remotely, and are easy to upgrade. That means they should work well in all kinds of conditions.

Because they are solar-powered, the traffic lights will keep running during power cuts. That should stop the usual gridlock that happens when there is load-shedding.

There will also be a central control room. It will let officials see what’s happening on the roads in real time during rush hour and change the timing of the lights to clear traffic on the busiest routes.

“One of the standout features of the new system is intelligent green wave coordination, which can be implemented by configuring phase differences and timing plans for main road intersections,” the company said.

“This functionality facilitates continuous green wave progression along main roads, effectively minimising vehicle stops and enhancing both traffic throughput and driver satisfaction.”

The traffic light upgrade comes after City Parking recently brought in an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system for parking.

The system uses cameras mounted on vehicles to scan, read and record number plates in real time. The information is then sent to a central control room so it can be monitored easily.
