Five people were injured on Thursday evening when a kombi was hit by a train at a level crossing in Nandi, Chiredzi.
It is the second crash in Chiredzi in just a week. Last Wednesday, a bus was struck by another train, leaving nine people dead and twenty-six injured.
In a statement released on Thursday night, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) said three men and two women were injured in the latest incident. They sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Three men and two women sustained varying degrees of injuries and have been rushed to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no lives were lost.
“This is the second incident to happen in Chiredzi in one week after a bus was struck by another train last Wednesday, resulting in nine deaths and 26 injuries. The NRZ wishes the injured persons a speedy recovery.
“We urge motorists, especially those driving Public Passenger Vehicles, to stop at level crossings as required and proceed only after ensuring that there is no approaching train.
“We would also like to advise Chiredzi residents and those travelling to the area to be extra vigilant during this cane harvesting season when train activity increases owing to movement of the crop to milling plants and transportation of raw sugar.”
In a separate incident, a man died near Melfort, Marondera, after being run over by a train in what appears to be a suicide.
According to the NRZ, the man was sitting on the railway tracks as the train approached. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 11 pm.
