The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has urged members of the public to confirm the clearance details of second-hand motor vehicles before paying the seller, to ensure compliance with revenue laws.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, 17 June, ZIMRA advised prospective buyers to scan and forward the following documents to facilitate verification: the agreement of sale, which must include the mobile numbers of both buyer and seller (its presumed at this stage, payment would not have been made); the vehicle registration book; the national ID or passport of the buyer; the national ID or passport of the seller; a photograph of the vehicle; and customs clearance documents, if available.
The warning follows recent ZIMRA operations targeting high-value second-hand imports, during which several high-profile owners have had their vehicles detained pending proof of proper duty payment.
Last Friday, ZIMRA officials were seen at the corner of Kirkman Road and Sherwood Road in Harare conducting an operation to impound vehicles suspected of breaching customs and import regulations.
