Khami Maximum Prison’s Adult Comprehensive School recorded an 89% pass rate in the 2025 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) O-Level examinations.
The school, which operates within Khami Maximum Security Prison, currently has an enrolment of 602 learners and a teaching staff of 71, all of whom are inmates.
It offers a wide range of programmes, from Early Childhood Development to tertiary-level studies. These include vocational courses such as motor mechanics and building studies, as well as degree programmes run in partnership with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and Midlands State University (MSU).
School secretary Sizwesenkosi Hlongwane (47), an inmate serving a 24-year sentence for armed robbery, said the results reflected the institution’s commitment to rehabilitation through education, as well as increasing learner participation across all levels.
“We have an ongoing school with an enrolment of 602 students and a staff complement of 71 teachers. Last year we achieved an 89 per cent pass rate in the ZIMSEC examinations,” he said.
The school has 277 primary-level learners and 84 secondary students. In addition, 99 inmates are studying building studies, while 71 are enrolled in motor mechanics programmes.
