A Mathematics teacher at Shongamiti High School in Chivi died after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident on 6 June 2026 at around 7 pm along the Ngundu–Tanganda Highway.

Masvingo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa identified the deceased as Misheck Tumburai, a teacher from Village 4, Masunda.

According to police, Tumburai was walking along the left side of the road in the same direction as the vehicle when the incident occurred.

Upon reaching the 65-kilometre peg, the driver allegedly lost control, veered off the road and struck him before speeding away.

Tumburai sustained a broken leg, a deep cut to the head, abrasions on his left arm and bruising across his body.

The incident was reported to Chiredzi Traffic Police, and his body was taken to Chiredzi District Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Inspector Dhewa urged motorists involved in accidents to stop and render assistance, warning that lives are often lost when drivers flee the scene.

“We urge motorists in cases of accidents to stop and render first aid. Sometimes the injuries are not fatal, but the person may end up dying because he or she fails to get help in time,” said Dhewa.

He also urged pedestrians to walk on the right-hand side of the road so they can see oncoming traffic.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver to come forward.
