Three bodies have been retrieved from a sewer line in Budiriro, where City of Harare teams were working to clear a blockage.
According to a statement from the City of Harare, emergency services were called out after reports that a man had drowned in a mud hole at the site of major sewer works. The teams ended up retrieving three bodies.
On Sunday, council officials were informed that a man walking home had fallen into the mud hole. A sub-aqua team led by Victor Kazembe, known as Coach Rambo, working with the City of Harare Fire Brigade, first retrieved the body of a young woman who had gone missing the previous evening.
Kazembe then recovered a second body, a man, but it was not the person the rescue teams had initially been looking for.
He later retrieved the third body, that of the young man reported to have fallen into the mud pool.
Volunteer group ConCERT was at the scene assisting with coordination alongside the Fire Brigade.
Deputy Mayor Rose Muronda, disaster risk management chairperson Cllr Jane Bhingari, and Cllrs Pedzesai and Dzinomurumbi remained at the scene helping out until the early hours of Monday.
Harare Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume has ordered an immediate investigation into the deaths and said he wants answers within hours.
