A Kezi man has been jailed for an effective 10 years for two counts of armed robbery after a violent home invasion in Maphisa last year.
The Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced Sandile Ngwenya, 33, over the October 2025 attack on two men at a house in Mafuyana, Maphisa.
The court heard that at about 10 pm on 26 October 2025, the victims, aged 29 and 32, returned home from Mbeba Business Centre and were confronted at their back door by Ngwenya. He was wearing a black balaclava and armed with an AK-SA ARMS AK20 9mm pistol.
Ngwenya pointed the firearm at the pair, demanded cash and mobile phones, and ordered them inside.
One victim slipped away to the other side of the building. As Ngwenya searched for him, the remaining victim tried to disarm him, grabbing his right hand. A struggle ensued, and Ngwenya struck the victim on the forehead with the butt of the pistol.
The second victim returned to help but was shot in the forehead. Neighbours heard the commotion and helped apprehend Ngwenya, who sustained a broken right leg and head injuries during the incident.
Police recovered an AK-SA ARMS AK20 9mm pistol with five live rounds, a black wallet containing US$1, a bus ticket and a Samsung Galaxy A03 mobile phone.
In sentencing Ngwenya, the court noted the use of a firearm and the injuries caused. He will serve 10 years in prison.
