An MWOS employee from Ngezi was allegedly conned out of more than US$2,000 by a gambling syndicate known as “Chadonha” in Harare on Monday.
Police say Abraham Pambayi, who works at MWOS Betting House in Turf, Ngezi, was tricked by the gang using a bundle of fake US dollars.
He was on his way to hand in company cash at MWOS Betting House headquarters.
According to the police report, Pambayi got off a kombi at Robert Mugabe Square in Harare at around 9:30 am on Africa Day. He had boarded the kombi in Turf, Ngezi.
He was walking along Robert Mugabe Way towards the CBD to deliver US$1,200 to the headquarters when he met one of the syndicate members near Rotten Row Road.
The man dropped what looked like a bundle of US dollars in front of him. Pambayi picked it up, and the two agreed to go to the Kopje area to share the money.
On the way, other men joined them and robbed Pambayi of US$2,040 in cash he had in his jacket.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.
“We are investigating a case of plain robbery. The complainant was tricked and lost US$2,040 in total,” Insp Chakanza said.
