A leaked audio recording – which has gone viral – involving two interlocutors known to The NewsHawks reveals ZANU-PF Central Committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s hidden business and political strategy, and his burning ambition to succeed President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2030.
According to the audio, Tagwirei’s plan involves taking over more sectors of the economy, making larger sums of money, and using that wealth to influence the military and politics so he can eventually become President in 2030 after seeing off Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.
The succession battle against Chiwenga, the audio says, will come soon after contentious constitutional amendments have been passed by Parliament and signed into law by the President.
Chiwenga is locked in a fierce succession battle with Mnangagwa. He is fighting tooth and nail to take over from him, posing a direct threat to Tagwirei’s ambitions. It is alleged that Mnangagwa does not want Chiwenga to succeed him.
Tagwirei and former Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander, retired General Philip Valerio Sibanda, are also widely seen as contenders in the race to State House.
The audio confirms much of what is already in the public domain, including that Tagwirei sees himself as the de facto Prime Minister, effectively co-running the government with President Mnangagwa.
Perched at the commanding heights of the economy, Tagwirei wields vast political, economic, business, policy and decision-making power. That influence has left him feeling unstoppable in his political agenda.
The recording says Tagwirei is already a billionaire who controls key sectors of the economy and plans to extend his sway over mining, land, health, education and energy through a string of lucrative, multi-million-dollar deals.
Tagwirei views himself as far wealthier than local tycoons such as Wicknell Chivayo and Pedzisayi Scott Sakupwanya. According to the audio, he sees only Billy Rautenbach, another close Mnangagwa ally, as a genuine competitor.
Through policy influence, Tagwirei is tightening his grip on the gold sector while barring foreign entrants, owns vast tracts of land, and plans to build a health empire, control student accommodation, and dominate fuel distribution.
He believes this strategy will make him an even more powerful billionaire and, in turn, propel him to the presidency.
