Human rights lawyer and opposition leader Tendai Biti, along with former MDC activist Morgan Ncube, were remanded to 16 June after being arrested for allegedly holding an unauthorised meeting on Constitutional Amendment Bill No 3.
The pair appeared before Mutare magistrate Honest Musiiwa on Tuesday, where their case was postponed to 16 June. Brighton Garikai Chiromo appeared for the State.
Biti, who is the convenor of the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF), and Ncube, the organisation’s national programmes director, were arrested on 21 March 2026 after a meeting at 26B Carrington, Darlington, Mutare.
Prosecutors allege the meeting was attended by about 30 people and focused on the Constitutional Amendment Bill No 3. They say the gathering was held without notifying the Mutare Central District Regulating Authority, as required by law.
The State further claims the venue is commonly associated with political meetings linked to MDC Alliance and Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters.
Biti and Ncube are represented by Chris Ndlovu of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners. The matter was earlier postponed to 26 May after the State said it was not ready for trial. Both men remain on bail pending their next court appearance on 16 June.
