A 36-year-old man from Selous has been jailed for two years after setting fire to another man’s hut over a US$2 dispute on 3 April 2026.

Ali Munyambwana had an argument with the victim at a shop in the Selous Tobacco Farm compound.

After the disagreement, he went straight to the victim’s house and set the thatched hut alight while a neighbour looked on.

The fire destroyed the hut, along with a work suit, a pair of safety shoes, and 5kg of beans. The incident was reported to the police, leading to Munyambwana’s arrest.

He was initially sentenced to three years in prison, but six months were suspended on condition that he pay restitution, and a further six months were suspended for good behaviour.
