Residents of Dangamvura in Mutare are living in fear as a hooded, machete-wielding attacker terrorises the suburb under the cover of darkness, ambushing unsuspecting victims—particularly lone women.
The assailant, believed to be an adult male, has been targeting unaccompanied women, amid growing reports of sexual assaults.
The acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, directed inquiries to the national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who was unavailable for comment due to official duties in Mvurwi.
In the latest incident, a woman was attacked near Dangamvura Clinic on Tuesday night. She sustained a deep cut to her middle finger and lost her phone during the ordeal. She managed to escape only when a passing vehicle illuminated the scene, startling the attacker and forcing him to flee into the night.
In response to the growing threat, police conducted an awareness campaign in Dangamvura last week, urging residents to remain highly vigilant and avoid walking alone after dark.
