South Africa’s Health Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, has promised to help repatriate the bodies of a Zimbabwean family killed in a road accident involving his driver.

Beauty Shoperai and her one-year-old son, Paul Masunda Junior, died on Saturday night after being hit by a car transporting the minister.

Shoperai was reportedly trying to reach her husband, Paul Masunda, who had been killed in a separate accident just minutes earlier.

Masunda worked as a freelance handyman and sold firewood to support his family.

His family says they cannot afford the R75,000 needed to take the bodies back to Zimbabwe for burial in Jerera.

On Friday 15 May, Motsoaledi visited the family at their home in Bela-Bela, Limpopo. He was joined by a small group of officials from his department.

“It’s a tragedy that no human being could have expected, so we also came because the family needs repatriation back to Zimbabwe. It so happens coincidentally that the certification and arrangements to repatriate people are done by the Department of Health, so we are going to see what arrangements we can do for them,” said Motsoaledi.

The Zimbabwean Consulate has also committed to speeding up the process, and the family plans to hold the funeral next Tuesday.
