An armed robber caught on camera breaking into a home in Bulawayo’s Mahatshula East suburb earlier this month has been arrested.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed on Thursday, 15 May, that the suspect, Joseph Phiri, 28, is now in custody.

Phiri was arrested in connection with a string of armed robberies in Mahatshula suburb, Bulawayo, between 15 December 2025 and 13 May 2026.

“In one of the incidents, a video went viral on social media as the suspect, who was wearing a maroon and grey bucket hat and grey jacket, tried to break into a house,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said Phiri first teamed up with Challenge Lucky Neta, 38, Trust Adam Mubvumbi, 35, and Wellington Nyakurima, alias Dombadomba, 33. Together they carried out seven robberies, attacking victims with knives and sjamboks while armed with pistols.

His three accomplices were later arrested and remanded in custody at Khami Prison.

Commissioner Nyathi said Phiri then formed another syndicate and committed two more cases. This time, he worked with Pauros Hadebe, alias Mengezi, Oscar Ndlovu, alias Mao, and Jomo Chomu to attack people in Mahatshula East.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Pauros Hadebe, Oscar Ndlovu and Jomo Chomu. Anyone with information on their whereabouts should feel free to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest Police Station,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
