Two men have been jailed for raping teenage girls in their families, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed on Wednesday.
In the first case, a 55-year-old man from Esigodini was sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison by the Gwanda Regional Magistrate Court for raping his 14-year-old niece.
The court heard that the offence occurred in June 2025 during a party at the man’s homestead. The victim’s mother had placed a breastfeeding infant in the man’s bedroom to sleep, leaving the teenager to watch over the baby. The man later entered the room, raped the girl and threatened her not to tell anyone.
The abuse came to light in February 2026 after the victim’s mother noticed physical changes and questioned her daughter. The teenager disclosed that she was pregnant and described what had happened. A police report was filed, and the man was arrested.
In a separate case, the Rusape Magistrates’ Court jailed a 30-year-old stepfather from Nyazura for 20 years for raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter.
The court heard that in January 2025, the man left home for his job as a guard and later asked a neighbour to send the girl to his workplace with cash. When she arrived at his guard room, he kept her there until dark. He then threatened to kill her if she did not comply and rape her. He threatened her again not to report the abuse.
The man went on to rape the girl several times, both at home and in nearby woods. The case was reported to the police after the girl’s mother suspected she was pregnant and questioned her.
The NPAZ said perpetrators of sexual violence would be prosecuted and held accountable. It added that most cases involving minors were carried out by people known to the victim.
The authority urged the public to watch for signs of abuse and to be careful about who they trust to look after children.
