The Prosecutor-General, Loyce Matanda-Moyo, has said that prosecutors must value fairness and justice over simply winning cases.

She stressed that their performance should be judged by their commitment to fair outcomes, rather than their win-loss records.

Speaking at the opening of an Appeals Section Training Workshop in Harare this week, Matanda-Moyo said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) exists to serve the public interest and the Constitution, rather than any political agenda.

She asserted that the NPAZ’s role is to protect the integrity of the legal system by remaining competent, impartial, and professional in all legal matters.

“Prosecutors operate under section 261 of the Constitution, which demands deep knowledge of evidence, procedure, and the rule of law and failure to meet these standards undermines public confidence in the justice system,” Matanda-Moyo said.

“As prosecutors, we do not choose our clients. We serve the public interest, regardless of the individual involved.

“While the defence seeks a result for their client, the prosecutor’s duty is to the truth.”
