Former Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi has been granted US$1,000 bail pending judgment in a case in which he is accused of defrauding the Government of US$2 million during his tenure as Minister of Tourism and Hospitality.

Mzembi was granted bail by the High Court in Harare on Monday, 4 May. His bail conditions include paying the US$1,000, surrendering his passport, residing at his Harare address, and not travelling more than 30km from the court.

He was arrested in June last year on his return from South Africa. The charges relate to allegations that he donated television sets intended for 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks without Treasury or Cabinet approval.

His lawyer, Emmanuel Samundombe, said Mzembi remained in custody because of a mix-up with release papers but was expected to be released on Tuesday.
