A primary school teacher has been jailed for indecently assaulting three female pupils, all in Grade 5, at a school in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West Province.
The 47-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims, was convicted at the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment. He will serve an effective 12 months behind bars.
The court heard that in March 2026, the teacher used his position of authority to target three pupils aged between 10 and 11.
In the first incident, he ordered a 10-year-old girl to deliver books to his house, where he kissed her and caressed her neck.
On another occasion at the same school, he untucked the shirt of an 11-year-old pupil in the classroom, caressed her back, made lewd remarks and exposed himself.
The third count related to showing pornographic material from his mobile phone to another 11-year-old student during lesson time.
The abuse came to light after the victims disclosed what had happened, leading to the teacher’s arrest and prosecution, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said in a statement.
“A teacher is a person entrusted with the safety and moral guidance of children,” the NPAZ said. “The offender grossly violated this sacred duty, exploiting the innocence of his students for his own indecent gratification.”
