Coventry City have ended their 25-year absence from the English Premier League after securing promotion with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

Needing only a point, Frank Lampard’s side sealed their return as Bobby Thomas headed a late equaliser at Ewood Park after Ryoya Morishita had given Blackburn the lead early in the second half.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among players and the 7,500 travelling fans, with Coventry now top of the Championship on 86 points from 43 games, 13 clear of third-placed Millwall with three matches remaining.

It marks a remarkable turnaround for the Sky Blues, who were relegated from the top flight in 2001 and later dropped as far as League Two amid financial turmoil, ground-sharing disputes and fan protests.

Since a change in ownership in 2023, Coventry have rebuilt under Lampard, completing a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

The club also has strong Zimbabwean ties. Former national team captain Peter Ndlovu made his name at Coventry after joining from Highlanders in 1991 as a teenager for around £10,000.

On 19 August 1992, playing against Tottenham Hotspur, Ndlovu became the first African footballer to feature in the newly formed Premier League. He spent six years at Coventry, making 196 appearances.

His standout moment came in 1995 when he scored a hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield, becoming the first visiting player to do so there in 30 years.

During a period when Coventry often battled relegation, Ndlovu’s flair and attacking quality proved crucial, helping the club stay in the top flight and paving the way for future African stars such as Nwankwo Kanu, Didier Drogba and Mohamed Salah.
