The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) says the clean-up following an accidental diesel spill on 15 April 2026 along the Mazowe–Mvurwi Highway has been completed.
In a statement issued on Friday, EMA said that by 5 p.m., the affected area had been fully contained to prevent further contamination.
The agency said contaminated soil had been excavated for bioremediation, using natural organic materials to break down hydrocarbons from the spilt fuel.
EMA indicated that further assessments along the downstream river channel showed minimal signs of contamination, which it attributed to the strong river current dispersing the pollutants.
The Agency added: “Water samples have been collected from strategic points along the river system for analysis at the Environmental Management Agency Laboratory (EMAL) to determine the extent of contamination, and this will continue as a monitoring mechanism for decision-making.
“However, communities are still encouraged to use alternative sources of water pending finalisation on the quality of water by EMAL.”
