Despite the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) announcing on Wednesday increased deployments in Harare West constituency to curb armed robberies, Mabelreign Girls High School was raided on Thursday, with suspects making off with at least US$500.
The attackers allegedly assaulted school security guards, leaving one in a critical condition. It is the third school robbery reported within a week in the Westgate, Mabelreign and Marlborough areas.
In the latest incident, one guard was on perimeter patrol when he encountered three men in the school grounds. They allegedly seized him and forced him to the administration block.
The suspects were armed with a hammer, torches, wire, pliers and crowbars. They allegedly tied the guard’s hands and legs with wire before breaking into the administration block.
They later attacked a second guard at the SDC block, striking him on the forehead and leaving him with a deep cut.
The robbers then forced entry into the administration block, broke open a storeroom and removed a safe containing less than US$500, which they loaded into an unidentified vehicle before fleeing.
In related incidents in the same area, a school and orphanage in Good Hope, Westgate, was robbed of more than US$30,000, while a security guard was killed during a separate attack at Hallingbury Primary School.
At the Village of Hope Institution, director Richard Chimbetete said three armed men ransacked offices, including those of senior staff, for nearly an hour before escaping with cash. The robbers are alleged to have used police-issued firearms during the raid.
At Marlborough High School, suspects reportedly stole US$28 after failing to access a safe they believed contained a larger sum of money.
