Veteran broadcaster Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo, popularly known as Tich Mataz, appeared in court on Tuesday facing a charge of culpable homicide after he allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian in Harare in 2024.

The 56-year-old was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai.

He was remanded to 19 May for the start of the trial. As he was brought to court on summons, issues of bail did not arise.

Prosecutor Charlotte Gomani alleged that on 27 July 2024, Matambanadzo was driving a Toyota Hilux westbound along Samora Machel Avenue with three passengers on board when he struck 44-year-old pedestrian Daniel Uchena near Odzi Flats in Eastlea.

The State alleges that Uchena, who was walking southbound, was hit by the vehicle’s right front fender, causing him to fall onto the tarmac and sustain internal injuries. He had no visible external injuries.

He was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead on admission and certified dead by Dr Mushambi.

Matambanadzo’s vehicle sustained damage to the front right bumper and windscreen and was later examined by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) at Eastlea.

The State alleges negligence on the part of Matambanadzo, saying he failed to keep a proper lookout, did not stop or take evasive action, and was driving at excessive speed.
