The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned social media activist Majaira Jairos against fabricating purported police statements and attributing his own statements to the organisation.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, on Monday, 13 April, said Majaira Jairos and his associates had created a fake police statement suggesting that the police were supporting an alleged “peaceful” march scheduled for 15 April 2026.
“The ZRP equivocally dismisses a fake press statement and misinformation by a social media activist, Majaira Jairos that the Police is supporting what he calls ‘peaceful’ march or demonstration on 15/04/26,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
“The Police warns Majaira Jairosi and his acolytes that any attempts to craft fake press statements and attribute them to ZRP will result in the law taking its course without fear or favour.”
The bogus ZRP statement, which has been attributed to Commissioner Nyathi, reads: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to advise the public that it is aware of peaceful protests scheduled for Wednesday, 15 April 2026, across the country.
“Appropriate measures have been put in place, including the deployment of police officers, to ensure the maintenance of law and order and the safety of all citizens.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police unequivocally affirms that every citizen has the constitutional right to express themselves peacefully.
“This right will be respected and protected, provided that it is exercised in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights, freedoms, and security of others.
“At the same time, the Police Service will act decisively and without hesitation against any acts of violence, disorder, or lawlessness. Any individuals found violating the law will be dealt with in accordance with established legal procedures.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police remains steadfast in its commitment to professionalism, impartiality, and institutional independence.
“The Service will not be swayed by political influence and will continue to discharge its mandate fairly and without fear or favour.
“While upholding these principles may present challenges, the institution stands prepared to endure such pressures in the interest of justice, accountability, and the preservation of public trust.”
