Ten of the sixteen undocumented Zimbabwean nationals arrested following a police operation on the N1 motorway made a brief appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 7 April.
The group was detained after their Cape Town-bound bus, travelling from Zimbabwe, was intercepted at a roadblock near Bloemfontein on the evening of Thursday, 2 April.
The operation was part of an intensified road safety campaign conducted by the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport over the Easter holiday weekend.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), legal proceedings for the individuals have been postponed to various dates for a range of administrative reasons.
The NPA further said that several cases were not officially enrolled due to a lack of prima facie evidence.
The arrests were part of a wider crackdown that saw a total of 32 undocumented Zimbabwean nationals, including infants and young children, taken into custody.
