A much-anticipated wedding in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was called off on Sunday after the arrest of the groom and his father.

The pair were among 45 motorists arrested for drink-driving during a major operation by the Road Traffic Inspectorate, carried out late on Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday.

Authorities said those arrested failed to respond adequately to the question “#NenzaniLaEzweni?” (“What are you doing in the nation?”).

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the arrests.

Others caught up in the crackdown included members of the community from various professions, among them a lecturer, a safety manager, two teachers, two nurses, a pharmacist, a chief liaison officer from a local municipality, and a student.

The lecturer reportedly claimed he could “spend a week speaking only English without using Zulu” when asked the question.

“The wedding, which was scheduled to take place at 11 am today, has been called off,” Sibiya said.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma commented on the matter, issuing a stern warning: “Arrest all of them and show no mercy.”
