Seven people have died after being hit by a speeding haulage truck while standing near an accident scene.

Chairperson of the Matabeleland South Provincial Civil Protection Committee, Zachariah Jusah, said the tragedy happened on Friday at around 10 pm in the Mawabeni area along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road.

“A Nissan March and a Toyota Probox rammed into each other at a bridge in the Mawabeni area. Both cars were headed towards Gwanda.

“A Kombi that was headed towards the same direction rammed into the stationary vehicles. Six people were injured and rushed to the hospital,” said Jusah.

The driver of the haulage truck, seemingly unaware of the accident ahead, sped through the scene and struck people who were standing nearby.

“Community members ran to the scene to view the accident. A haulage truck headed towards Bulawayo passed by at high speed and hit people, killing five on the spot while two died on their way to the hospital,” he said.
