Zimbabwe has handed over 330 metric tonnes of maize to Malawi, marking the third and final consignment of humanitarian aid to the country.

The latest delivery brings Zimbabwe’s total support to 1,000 metric tonnes, which was pledged and delivered in phases.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Malawi, Nancy Saungweme, officially handed over the consignment to the Malawian government last week.

The handover was received by a high-level delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda and Chief Secretary to Government Justin Adack Saidi.

The maize donation is part of Zimbabwe’s efforts to support communities in Malawi affected by climate-related rains and flooding.

The assistance was delivered in three phases: an initial consignment of 300 tonnes of red sorghum along with assorted food and essential non-food items, followed by 370 tonnes of maize, and finally 330 tonnes of maize, completing the pledge.

Speaking at the handover, Saungweme said the support reflects the strong historical and cultural ties between Zimbabwe and Malawi. She said:

”This is not the end, we shall continue to support each other, because it is our duty to nurture our ties for the benefit of our people and the Region at large.”

The aid comes at a crucial time, as Malawi continues to recover from devastating floods and a deepening food crisis.

Despite facing its own recurring food shortages, Zimbabwe has stepped in to support its fellow Southern African nation during these challenging times.
