ZANU-PF’s Director of Information, Farai Marapira, has declared that the ruling party will remain in power indefinitely, dismissing claims of a succession crisis.

Speaking in an interview with SABC, Marapira said those suggesting ZANU-PF faces internal succession problems do not understand how the party conducts its affairs.

“If anyone honestly believes we have a succession problem in ZANU-PF, then they don’t know what we are about.

“We are ZANU-PF, we are a revolutionary party. We are a party born of war, blood, and sacrifice.

“We are not affected by these false headlines. These are challenges in the heads of people who wish for our demise.

“We as ZANU-PF, when the time for succession comes, we’ll do it so smoothly, you are going to be surprised.

“If we are both alive, I would love you to call me again on this interview, and you will see how smooth it will have gone,” said Marapira.

After controversially wresting control of the CCC from Nelson Chamisa through a series of disputed court rulings, little-known activist Sengezo Tshabangu went on to weaken the opposition by recalling its MPs — a move that handed ZANU-PF a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Marapira said the ruling party has no interest in the debate over scrapping the recall clause from the Constitution.

He argued that the provision is necessary because it keeps parliamentarians accountable to their parties.

“One of the major complaints of the opposition is the recall clause because they have been complaining about how recalls should be struck out of the constitution.

“But we have said that this is actually a binding of the people’s will because when people go for elections, they go as members of political parties representing party manifestos and party ideologies.

“So when they assume these positions, they have a modicum and a true sense of accountability to that party through whose manifesto they’ve gone in.

“So it is not our fault that the opposition is not able to structure itself in such a way that they can respect their own ethos and their own values.

“So we have not accepted as ZANU-PF that we include this recall clause. These are not issues they are talking about,” said Marapira.
