A one-year-old girl drowned in a bucket of water on 31 March after being left to play with her older brother in Nketa, Bulawayo.

Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele (pictured), said the toddler had been left in the care of her 11-year-old brother while their 20-year-old mother went to take a bath at around 4 PM. She said:

“On 31 March 2026 at around 1600 hours, a female adult aged 20 years, of Nketa, Bulawayo, left the now deceased playing with her brother, a male juvenile aged 11 years of the same address, when she was going to take a bath.”

Inspector Msebele said that while the mother was in the bathroom, she heard the older child calling for help, shouting that the toddler was drowning in a bucket of water. She said:

“When she came out of the bathroom, the now deceased had already been taken out of the bucket.”

The child was rushed to a nearby private clinic for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival. A police report was later filed.

Inspector Msebele urged the public to always prioritise children’s safety, stressing that containers like buckets, basins, bathtubs, and water storage tanks should be kept out of children’s reach, as they pose a serious drowning risk.
