A 10-year-old boy from Buhera, Manicaland Province, tragically drowned after being swept away by a swollen river while returning from church last Sunday.
The boy, identified as Tashinga Chirinda, was with his mother, 35-year-old Memory Purazen, and two siblings when they tried to cross the Neramba River at around 1:45 pm. The river had burst its banks following days of heavy rain in the province.
Speaking to New Ziana, Acting Manicaland Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said the family felt they had no choice but to attempt the crossing despite the dangerous conditions.
As they entered the water, a strong current quickly swept Tashinga away, leaving his mother and siblings in shock.
Purazen and her other children managed to cling to shrubs along the riverbank. The mother eventually swam to safety and immediately alerted local authorities.
Police launched a search operation and found Tashinga’s body downstream. It was taken to Murambinda Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
