A rank tout in Harare has been jailed for 15 years after being convicted of raping a Grade 7 pupil at the Rezende Street bus terminus.

Givemore Mutape denied the charges but was found guilty by Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni after a full trial.

Mutape told the court he wasn’t a tout and that he repairs car radios. He said he had been fixing a commuter omnibus radio at the rank on the day in question.

He also claimed he could not have had sex because he had no testicles and invited the court to order a medical examination to prove it. The defence was rejected.

The prosecution, led by Kudakwashe Muza, said the incident happened on 19 July 2025. The girl had left home alone around midday to collect money for extra lessons from her stepfather at the corner of Leopold Takawira and Jason Moyo streets. After receiving US$10, she began walking home.

While waiting to board a kombi to Marlborough at the Rezende Parkade rank, touts allegedly blocked her from getting on.

Mutape is said to have approached her, offered to help and ushered her into a nearby white kombi. She sat alone in the back seat.

The court heard that Mutape followed her into the vehicle, locked the doors, covered her mouth with a white cloth and raped her. He later released her, and she returned home.

The rape only came to light on 21 July when the girl’s uncle, upset that she had come home late, visited her school. Her teacher then interviewed her, and the pupil disclosed what had happened.
