A 93-year-old woman from Gutu who had been living in two dilapidated huts and had lost her eyesight has been given a new lease of life, thanks to the generosity of well-wishers.

Mbuya Eustina Mudumha, of Chifamba Village under Chief Munyaradzi in Zvavahera, has no children and cares for a Form Three girl who was abandoned by her parents.

Her story drew widespread sympathy after it was highlighted by the Masvingo Mirror Helpline. In response, construction company Barmlow offered to build her a new homestead on condition that the assistance would not be politicised.

While the company awaited clearance to begin work, the local community, led by village head Chifamba, mobilised resources including bricks, cement, builders and labour, and immediately started construction.

Support also came from abroad, with UK-based Memory Machingauta donating US$100.

As a result of these combined efforts, Mbuya Mudumha now has a two-bedroomed house and a proper kitchen.

The community also facilitated her treatment at Morgenster Mission Hospital, where she underwent successful eye surgery and has since regained her sight.
