The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) has clarified that it has not registered an institution called Abel Tendekai Muzorewa University.
In a statement issued on 24 March 2026, ZIMCHE said it was aware of reports circulating on social media and other informal channels claiming that the university would open in Rusape, Manicaland Province.
According to the claims, the institution was preparing to begin operations and enrol students from 1 August 2026, with plans for student accommodation in Rusape.
ZIMCHE stressed that Abel Tendekai Muzorewa University is not registered or accredited, and warned the public to exercise caution. Reads part of the statement:
“For the avoidance of doubt, the ZIMCHE wishes to categorically inform the public that the purported Abel Tendekai Muzorewa University is not registered or accredited by the ZIMCHE and therefore has no legal authority to operate as a university or to offer any undergraduate, postgraduate or honorary degree programmes in Zimbabwe.
“In terms of the ZIMCHE Act [Chapter 25:27], no institution may operate as a university or offer degree programmes in Zimbabwe without prior registration and accreditation by the ZIMCHE.
“Any institution that operates outside this regulatory framework is acting in violation of the laws governing higher education in Zimbabwe.
“Consequently, any attempt by representatives of the purported Abel Tendekai Muzorewa University to open their doors to the public, enrol students, or advertise academic programmes before obtaining registration and accreditation from the ZIMCHE would constitute an unlawful act.”
ZIMCHE has warned the representatives of the institution to stop any activities that could mislead the public into believing it is authorised to operate as a university in Zimbabwe.
The council advised that the institution must immediately cease any public claims suggesting it can enrol students or offer degree programmes until it has fully met the statutory requirements for registration and accreditation.
ZIMCHE further warned that any institution operating outside the provisions of the ZIMCHE Act may face enforcement action, including civil and criminal proceedings, as provided under Zimbabwean law. It added:
“This notice also serves as a caution to any other organisations or individuals who may intend to establish or operate higher education institutions without complying with regulatory requirements.
“The ZIMCHE will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any entity that undermines the integrity, credibility, and quality assurance framework of Zimbabwe’s higher education system.
“Members of the public, prospective students, parents, and employers are strongly advised to verify the registration and accreditation status of any institution claiming to offer degree programmes before engaging with or enrolling at such institutions.”
