Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, has assured journalists that their safety will be protected during the upcoming public hearings on Amendment Bill No. 3.
Speaking at a meeting organised by TellZim News in Harare, Nyathi stressed that no journalist should face harassment or attacks while carrying out their duties, even given the potentially tense nature of the hearings. He said:
“At no point shall a journalist be attacked or harassed, either by political parties, the police, or any other security officers, while doing their work during the upcoming public hearings and at any other time.”
He acknowledged the risks associated with public consultations and stressed the importance of keeping media practitioners safe, especially during critical national processes.
Nyathi added that the police would work closely with Parliament to ensure journalists are recognised and protected throughout the hearings.
He also said they would liaise with Parliament’s Public Relations and Communications Department, as well as the Ministry of Information, to make sure reporters are properly supported while covering the proceedings. Said Nyathi:
“We do not want to end up having reports of journalists being assaulted or harassed. Now that you have brought it to our attention, we will definitely engage and give feedback in the next few days.”
