The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has dismissed social media claims that Mtshabezi Dam has breached following heavy rains that have hit parts of Matabeleland in recent days.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 22 March, ZINWA said the dam is full and spilling but remains structurally sound and has not breached.

The authority clarified that it is the Mtshabezi High School Dam, not Mtshabezi Dam, that has breached. Reads the statement:

“The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) wishes to inform stakeholders and the public that Mtshabezi Dam, which is full and spilling, is structurally safe and has not breached, as has been inferred in some social media posts and audios.

“What has been confirmed to have breached is the Mtshabezi High School Dam. Information to the effect that the Mtshabezi Dam has breached should thus be disregarded.

“Members of the public are advised not to circulate such information, as it may cause unnecessary alarm.”
