Govt Exploring Ways To Reduce Fuel Prices – Mthuli

Essential Tools

The government says it is looking at fiscal measures that could bring down fuel prices, in a bid to cushion ordinary people and businesses from global oil supply shocks.

Speaking on the sidelines of a fundraising luncheon for Ingutsheni Central Hospital in Bulawayo on Friday, 20 March 2026, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube said that the goverment is exploring ways to ease fuel costs, which have surged this month. Said Ncube:

“As Government, we are currently looking at various taxes and levies to see if we can do further adjustments going forward, so as to cap the impact of this hike in global prices.

“So, citizens can always expect us as Government to act in their interests, and they should watch the space as we go forward.

“There is indeed a possibility that we will reduce (the fuel prices), but we are just looking at ways to do it, because we have to do it in a way that is responsible.

“We don’t want to reduce it and then prices keep rising, and then we are now caught in a quandary.

“We have to balance everything and see how to do it, but we have every intention to contain the increase in the prices using our taxes, our levies and our subsidies.”

Ncube said another way they are looking to ease fuel costs is by raising the ethanol blend from 5% to 20%.

My thinking is that my beloved government allow importation of fuel down to individual level with strict adherence to safety regulations.

Let there be allowed participation of small scale players in the fuel industry with strict safety regulations observed. If competition in the field increases, competitive prices will be put in place.

Please my government allow our small scale businesses who can to be allowed entrance into this field.
