A 42-year-old man who had been granted US$50 bail by a provincial magistrate in Bulawayo after being arrested for undermining the authority of the President has died.
He reportedly took his own life a day after his release.
Tineyi Mhosva appeared before provincial magistrate Isheunesu Mathoba on 10 March 2026, where he was remanded out of custody on bail.
He is said to have died the following day, on 11 March, after ingesting poison.
Mhosva had been arrested over an incident on 26 February 2026 at the corner of 5th Avenue and George Silundika Street in Bulawayo.
Prosecutor Milton Moyo told the court that Mhosva approached a street vendor, Anna Mupandira (58), who was wearing a cap with the words “Zimbabwe Anti Presidential Criticism”.
The court heard that he questioned her about the cap before launching into a tirade in Shona, allegedly insulting both her and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He is alleged to have said: “Zvi hat zvenyu zve Zanu PF zvamakapfeka izvi ndezvembavha. Ini handitongwi nemunhu asiri Gushungo. Ndakaberekwa nembereko yekwa Gushungo. Mnangagwa nevanhu vake imbavha.”
Prosecutors said the comments, which roughly translate to accusing ZANU-PF supporters and the President of being “thieves,” were made despite knowing there was a risk of undermining the authority of the head of state.
The incident was reported to the police, leading to Mhosva’s arrest. He was later granted US$50 bail by Magistrate Mathoba.
