One of the suspects in the 2021 US$2.7 million ZB Bank cash-in-transit heist has been arrested after being betrayed by his brother, who allegedly squandered part of the stolen loot.

Alfred Shumba, who had been hiding in South Africa since the robbery, appeared before Harare magistrate Jessie Kufa on Monday following a tip-off from his brother after a fallout between the two.

Shumba reportedly left part of the cash with his brother when he fled, but when he confronted him for the money, their dispute led to his arrest.

The heist took place on 6 January 2021, when Shumba and accomplices targeted a cash-in-transit crew carrying seven boxes of cash worth US$2,775,000, destined for various ZB Bank branches in Chinhoyi, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru, Bulawayo, Gwanda and Zvishavane.

Fanuel Musakwa, a member of the crew, allegedly kept the gang updated on the cash movements.

Shumba and his gang followed the team from Harare. They stopped the crew at the 60 km peg, where they produced firearms, and threatened them before offloading the boxes into a red Toyota Hilux driven by Gerald Rutizirira.

The gang then drove to a farm west of Nyabira, broke open the boxes, and stole the cash before sharing it among themselves. Most of Shumba’s accomplices have already been arrested.

Shumba, who was remanded in custody pending investigations, is expected back in court on April 3 for trial continuation.
