The man accused of killing two police officers in Zaka on 1 March 2026 has now been linked to another case — the robbery of an EcoCash agent in the middle of Mucheke high-density suburb that shook Masvingo in 2025.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson for Masvingo Province, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, said the suspect, Daniel Munyanyi, is connected to the robbery that occurred in August last year. He said:
“I can confirm that the Munyanyi who killed two police officers in Zaka is the same person who robbed the EcoCash agent.”
According to police, Munyanyi was part of a three-member gang that robbed an EcoCash agent near Mucheke Rank, making off with US$5,300 in cash, US$1,100 worth of Econet airtime and two mobile phones.
The victim, EcoCash agent Shepherd Mtetwa, said police recently took Munyanyi to the scene of the robbery to demonstrate how the crime was carried out. Said Mtetwa:
“Munyanyi came with the Police on Saturday to demonstrate to the investigators and members of the Mucheke community committee how they carried out the robbery, including how they broke the doors and what they did inside.”
Meanwhile, Munyanyi appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Innocent Bepura last week, facing six counts of armed robbery.
He was sentenced to a combined 72 years in prison, with 10 years conditionally suspended.
This means Munyanyi will serve an effective 62 years for the six robbery counts in Masvingo.
