Several high-density suburbs in Bulawayo were left flooded after heavy rains battered the city from Tuesday afternoon into the evening.
Bulawayo Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo (pictured) said the worst-affected areas include Luveve 5, Emakhandeni and Pelandaba West. Said Moyo:
“The flooding has been attributed to weep hole issues, which have resulted in water accumulation in residential sections.”
Emergency teams have been dispatched to assess the situation and help affected residents.
Flooding is a recurring problem in many Zimbabwean cities and towns, often caused by litter and poor waste management blocking stormwater drains, which prevents water from flowing away, as well as unregulated construction on wetlands and other low-lying areas.
