South African media reports that Bellarmine Chatunga, the son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been living in South Africa illegally and was recently denied entry into the country.

Chatunga and his cousin, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, are facing charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and obstruction of justice over the shooting of a gardener at their Hyde Park home in Johannesburg last month. The firearm allegedly used in the incident has still not been recovered.

Reports suggest Chatunga could also face additional charges related to his illegal residence in South Africa. The pair appeared at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on 23 February 2026.

During proceedings, Chatunga’s legal team said he has a chronic medical condition, and he reportedly collapsed twice while in custody. They are set to return to court on 3 March 2026 for a formal bail application.

Specialist investigator Mike Bolhuis told SABC News that, despite the missing firearm, the state still believes it has a strong case against both men. Said Bolhuis:

“If the firearm is not found, it means there is corruption. Those on the scene will know where the weapon is, and they must be thoroughly investigated.

“Otherwise, they must all be charged because it is definitely defeating the end of justice, and there is a form of bribing, colluding and intimidation as well.

“The mere fact that the weapon disappeared cannot be allowed and must not be left aside.

“This case will not fall apart if the weapon is not found because all involved will be charged.”
