A 61-year-old man has been charged with culpable homicide after a bystander was shot dead during an attempt to slaughter a bull in Gwanda district.
Dumisani Nyathi appeared before Gwanda Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on 21 February in the Lushongwe area.
Prosecutors say Khonzani Sibanda, a local butcher, had collected the bull from Thuli Farm in Makwe and taken it to Lushongwe to be slaughtered, with Nyathi tasked with shooting the animal.
The bull was reportedly tied to a tree but broke free, charging towards people who had gathered nearby.
In the chaos, Nyathi allegedly fired at the animal with a shotgun but missed, striking 47-year-old Butholezwe Sibanda in the chest instead.
Sibanda was pronounced deceased at the scene.
