A 45-year-old man was arrested at Zimbabwe’s border with Mozambique as he allegedly tried to flee into the neighbouring country after reportedly killing his 50-year-old wife.
Elliot Nyambira, from Masvingo, was picked up in Chimanimani following the death of Muchaneta Makuwaza.
Police say he was intercepted at a roadblock near the border post after officers received a tip-off. He was reportedly found without any travel documents.
The incident that led to Makuwaza’s death is still under investigation, and a post-mortem is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Manicaland acting provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrest, saying Nyambira allegedly murdered his wife on 16 February. Said Asst Insp Chinyoka:
“He travelled overnight towards the eastern border, allegedly intending to cross into Mozambique through an illegal entry point.
“On February 17, ZRP Chimanimani received a tip-off that the accused, who was being sought in connection with a murder case that occurred in Masvingo the previous day, was on the run and heading towards the border.
“Police acted on the information and intercepted the suspect while he was trying to cross the border. He was arrested and taken to ZRP Chimanimani.
“He is expected to be transferred to Gutu for further investigations and court proceedings.
“We continue to urge members of the public to resolve their disputes peacefully and to seek assistance from community leaders, the police or relevant authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
“Domestic violence and murder are serious offences that attract heavy penalties.”
