Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the 28-year-old youngest son of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, reportedly collapsed twice in the holding cells at Bramley Police Station in Johannesburg and needed urgent medical attention.

Chatunga and his cousin, Thobias Mugabe Matonhodze (33), were arrested last week after one of them allegedly shot their gardener at a property in the upmarket Hyde Park suburb. One report said:

“While in custody, he collapsed twice, prompting medical attention and raising questions about his health and the conditions of detention.”

The duo appeared briefly in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 February.

The pair face charges of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and possession of a firearm.

The firearm charge comes even though police have yet to recover the gun allegedly used in last week’s shooting at the Mugabes’ luxury Hyde Park property.

It’s still unclear who fired the shot that left the 23-year-old employee, reportedly a gardener, critically injured.

The house where the alleged shooting took place is reportedly shared by Chatunga and his 33-year-old brother, Robert Mugabe Jr.
