Acting President Constantino Chiwenga has urged young couples to honour the sanctity of marriage, describing it as a lifelong union founded on love, faith and commitment. He also called on families to stay united through both hardships and joys.

Chiwenga made the remarks in Harare at the wedding of his nephew, David Tafadzwa Machekabuwe, who married Ratanang Noko on Saturday.

Machekabuwe is the late Margaret Machekabuwe’s son, Chiwenga’s sister, remembered for supporting him in his youth.

Margaret reportedly collected Chiwenga’s belongings from Mount St Mary’s Mission after he left formal education to join the liberation struggle.

Speaking to guests, Chiwenga stressed that marriage is more than a contract; it is a sacred union requiring patience, sacrifice and mutual support. He said:

“Marriage is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity, an enduring covenant, not simply a contract. To our newlyweds, be each other’s strength in times of weakness.

“Celebrate your joys together; comfort one another in sorrow and stand united through thick and thin, in both good times and bad.”

Chiwenga advised the couple and other young people to build marriages based on love, trust, open communication and mutual respect, stressing that forgiveness and small daily acts of kindness are key to strong family foundations.

He urged couples to nurture supportive relationships within their communities and extended families, saying healthy marriages help promote social cohesion and national development.

Chiwenga said marriage is a journey rather than a destination, and couples should strive to create a lasting legacy grounded in faith and shared purpose.
