A 24-year-old ex-convict, Leonard Mugashi, also known as “Shato”, was shot in the leg and arrested in Kwekwe last week after trying to evade police.
Mugashi, who had recently been released from prison, was caught attempting to rob a woman in Mbizo 11.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said officers responded to the incident, fired warning shots, chased Mugashi, and eventually captured him. Said Inspector Mahoko:
“Police in Kwekwe have arrested a recently released prisoner in connection with a spate of robberies in Kwekwe. The arrest happened on January 29 at about 6 PM.”
Inspector Mahoko said Mugashi had no fixed address and was arrested after being intercepted while attempting to attack a woman at her home in Mbizo 11, whom he had threatened with a knife. He said:
“The suspect tried to run away but could not make it. The determined police officers fired warning shots, calling for him to stop. He continued running and was subdued after being shot once on the knee.”
Inspector Mahoko said searches carried out after the arrest led to the recovery of an okapi knife and clothing items allegedly worn by Mugashi during a series of robberies in and around Kwekwe.
So far, Inspector Mahoko said the suspect has been linked to three robbery cases in Mbizo 8, 2, and 22, committed alongside two accomplices who remain at large.
In one of the armed robberies, the three suspects, allegedly armed with knives, an iron bar, and an axe, attacked 47-year-old Zivanai Machekera and his 44-year-old wife, Estery Faki, who resisted and was struck with the iron bar.
From the three houses they targeted, the suspects are alleged to have stolen US$415 and several items of clothing.
