Zimbabwe’s fuel consumption surged to over 2.1 billion litres in 2025, up sharply from 1.6 billion litres in 2024, according to new data from the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA).
The increase has been linked to a strong rebound in economic activity, with higher industrial output, expanding mining operations and increased transport volumes driving demand for both diesel and petrol across the country.
ZERA’s latest figures show sustained growth in the use of both fuels, with diesel leading demand due to its key role in powering heavy industry, logistics and agricultural machinery.
Economist Moses Chundu told NewsDay that diesel consumption, which exceeded 1.5 billion litres, alongside petrol usage of over 700 million litres, indicates that productive sectors are scaling up operations. Said Chundu:
“This is why the consumption trends continue to increase, as the sectors driving the economy are producing more.
“Fuel usage is projected to climb further, with regulatory authorities forecasting consumption to exceed 2,5 billion litres in 2026.”
